Monitoring and diagnostic systems for dry type transformers

Abstract

A cost effective and efficient system to monitor online local overheating of dry type transformers using fibre optic sensor technology was discussed. An offline analysis of the transfer function gave indications on interturn short circuits. The sensitivity in the range of a few percent of the whole number of windings enabled reduced maintenance and repair costs. The measurement of the absolute value of the signals as well as the difference between two adjacent sensors led to a detection sensitivity in the range of 20 pC even under noisy conditions.
