Abstract

The lifetime of liquid filled high voltage equipment is mainly determined by its insulation system, usually made of a liquid-paper insulation. There are various stresses, which this equipment must be able to withstand during operation. One risk is the occurrence of overvoltages, especially fast and slow increasing overvoltages, for example caused by atmospheric lightning or internal overvoltages caused by switching operations. Since the impulse voltage strength is mainly determined by the insulation liquid, the use of alternative insulation liquids requires a similar behaviour under impulse voltage stress than mineral oils. Thus, the impulse strength of four different insulation liquids was investigated and compared according to the IEC 60897 test standard. This includes natural and synthetic ester fluids as well as an inhibited synthetic insulation fluid on mineral oil basis and a conventional uninhibited mineral oil. To investigate the influence of the type of impulse voltage, lightning or switching impulse, and of the impulse energy input on the impulse voltage strength, the insulation liquids were stressed with different impulse voltages. Furthermore, the distances of the needle-sphere electrode arrangement and the water content of the insulation fluids were changed and their influences were analysed regarding to the impulse strength.
