Abstract

As transformer ageing progresses, the acid content in the insulating oil increases, with the temperature and type of acid particularly influencing the insulation's ageing rate. This work simulates the diffusion process of acids between oil and paper insulation at different temperatures in a laboratory experiment, using formic acid, acetic acid, and levulinic acid as test objects. The analysis of the change in total acid number, water content and infrared (IR) spectra of the oil and paper samples showed that high temperatures accelerate the diffusion of acids and cause depletion. Furthermore, a correlation between the acidity of the insulating paper, the oil and the spectral information was established to map the diffusion mechanism at different temperatures on a molecular level.
